Robert Vadra
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is preparing to file a chargesheet against businessman Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in connection with three different money laundering cases. According to sources, the agency is likely to submit these chargesheets in respective special courts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Once filed, ED will request the courts to take cognizance of the complaints and begin the trial proceedings.
On Wednesday, Robert Vadra was questioned for the second day in a row in connection with the 2008 Shikohpur (Gurugram) land deal in Haryana, which allegedly involved financial irregularities. He has already been questioned in two other cases as part of the agency’s ongoing probe into money laundering allegations.
One of the cases under investigation relates to UK-based arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari and his alleged links to Vadra. ED claims that a property located at 12-Bryanston Square in London was acquired by Bhandari in 2009 and renovated following instructions from Vadra, with renovation costs reportedly funded by him. Vadra, however, has categorically denied owning any property in London—directly or indirectly—and has dismissed the accusations as part of a “politically motivated conspiracy.”
The third case involves a land transaction in Bikaner, Rajasthan. ED had previously questioned both Robert Vadra and his mother, Maureen Vadra, in this matter. On Wednesday, Vadra appeared before the ED office in Delhi once again, reiterating that the case is rooted in "political vendetta" against him and his family. He further alleged that public confidence in investigating agencies has significantly declined and emphasized that he has always extended full cooperation during the inquiry.
Sources suggest that in addition to Vadra, several companies and individuals may be listed as accused or witnesses in the forthcoming chargesheets. The ED is said to be finalizing the documentation before formally initiating the next legal steps.
